THE CHALLENGE

Bringing an iconic tv quiz show into the modern era.

As the world’s longest running tv quiz show, It’s Academic has been around for decades and so has their on-air show package. The group at WETA wanted to update and refresh the brand and the the show package. Creative Director, Dylan Wilbur, reached out to me with the challenge of creating a 10 second show opener for the show that he would then use to inform the rest of the on air graphics.

THE PROCESS

Creating Style Frames

The brand needed a show opener that would feel energetic, modern, relevant, and cohesive with the rest of the key show visuals. I created three different style directions that leveraged the updated brand while each giving a slightly different feel.

THE RESULT

Animation

Going into animation, I wanted to showcase close-ups of the set and eventually dolly out to reveal the final logo lock-up. The music composition created for the show open is driving and upbeat, so I wanted to keep the camera moving while also creating focal points in each shot.

Animated Icons

I wanted to add a bit of visual interest and secondary motion to this piece, so I decided to create a looping animation for the icons. The icons also reinforce the academic theme.
